Vauxhall reveals stylish Astra Sports Tourer

Practical estate car joins hatchback to complete the Astra range

Vauxhall has unveiled its new Astra Sports Tourer estate model, which sees a big uplift in style, technology and space compared to its predecessor.

The British brand revealed its regular Astra hatchback earlier this year, which gets a radical design compared to the outgoing car, and the Sports Tourer follows the same bold design philosophy.

It’s the first Vauxhall estate car to benefit from the brand’s new design language – including its ‘Vizor’ front end that wraps the headlights, Griffin logo and safety cameras all behind one panel, cleaning up its look. Around the rear, the Vauxhall logo takes a prominent position on the bootlid, and is joined by ‘ASTRA’ lettering and large horizontal LED lights.

Inside, the ‘Pure Panel’ design that we’ve already seen on the Mokka and Astra hatch is introduced too, bringing a 10-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster of the same size, wrapped in one single strip of glass. Wireless smartphone mirroring is also offered as standard.

Though the new Astra Sports Tourer is actually 6cm shorter than the outgoing car, Vauxhall promises it’s actually roomier. The boot’s size has increased from 540 to 608 litres on petrol and diesel models, while measuring up to 1,634 litres when the rear seats are folded. It also comes with individually folding rear seats, which results in a ‘completely flat floor’ when they’re down.

An optional ‘Intelli-Space’ feature is also introduced, which sees a moveable boot floor and retractable boot floor cover fitted that can be easily stored when not needed.

Like the standard hatchback, the Astra Sports Tourer will be available with petrol and diesel engines ranging from 108bhp to 128bhp, while a more powerful plug-in hybrid is also offered for the first time, delivering up to 222bhp. Though Vauxhall has confirmed it will make an electric Astra-e hatchback, this is unlikely to be available on this estate model.

No prices have been announced yet, but expect a £1,500 price increase on the standard Astra’s £23,275 starting price. Order books are set to open at the start of next year, with first deliveries due in the summer.
