New Toyota Corolla Cross to complete brand’s European SUV range

New hybrid crossover was revealed alongside a raft of new models from the firm

Toyota is introducing a new SUV for Europe – the Corolla Cross.

Using the brand’s famed nameplate, the Corolla Cross slots between the C-HR and RAV4 in Toyota’s extensive SUV range, which is the widest on the European market. It also means the Corolla will soon be available as an SUV, hatchback, estate car and saloon.

In Europe, the Corolla Cross will be powered exclusively by a hybrid system, with the model set to be the first to feature Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, with its 2.0-litre petrol-electric powertrain set to put out 195bhp, and enable a 0-60mph time of around eight seconds. It will also be available with the option of all-wheel-drive to offer greater traction in low-grip conditions. Toyota also says the performance has been improved too, and is now ‘more linear, predictable and controllable’.

The interior aims to prioritise practicality, with its wide-opening doors set to allow for easier access, while a low boot sill makes it simpler to load and unload heavier items. Inside, the Corolla Cross gets plenty of technology, including a 10.5-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cockpit display, which is said to be the largest in its segment. =

Elsewhere, the Corolla Cross is equipped with Toyota’s ‘T-Mate’ safety system, incorporating features like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist and lane trace assist.

Pricing and specifications haven’t been announced, but will be detailed ahead of first European deliveries in Autumn 2022.

Also on display at Toyota’s Kenshiki forum event included the brand’s new Yaris GR Sport, which aims to add some sportier styling and details from the firm’s famed hot hatch to the standard Yaris supermini. A special GR Yaris prototype was also on show, featuring a revised engine capable of running on hydrogen. Finally, Toyota’s new bZ4X – its first EV – made its European debut.
