New MG5 EV estate set to arrive in the UK later this year

The new electric estate car will be MG’s second EV

MG has announced that it will launch its second EV later this year with the new MG5.

The MG5 follows on from the MG ZS EV, which has been on sale since last year and has proven very popular for the firm. It will become the first electric estate car to go on sale in the UK – appealing to buyers wanting an EV with a big boot.

While MG hasn’t announced any powertrain details, the firm has claimed it will offer 214 miles of electric range. That’s likely to mean it features a larger battery than the 44kWh one found in the MG ZS EV, which enables a 163-mile electric range.

The MG ZS EV is likely to be an updated version of a Roewe-badged model already available in China; Roewe is also owned by SAIC Motor, which MG is part of. If so, the MG5 is set to be slightly smaller than other hatchback-based estates such as the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer and Volkswagen Golf Estate.

Despite its smaller size, though, MG claims it will still have a 578-litre boot, which opens up to 1,456 litres with the seats folded down. The new electric estate is set to be a popular choice with fleet buyers, and will come with the same seven-year warranty found across the MG range.

MG is currently the UK’s fastest growing car brand, helped mainly by its growing dealer network and ZS crossover, which has recently been refreshed. Last month its sales increased by 88 per cent, despite the overall new car market declining by 35 per cent.

Further details are expected to be announced about the MG5 ahead of its arrival in showrooms later this year.
