2022 BMW i4 — is this the Tesla Model 3’s biggest threat?

We take a look at how the BMW i4 could give the heralded Tesla Model 3 a run for its money.

When it comes to electric cars, the Tesla Model 3 is arguably setting a benchmark for range, performance and technology.

That said, the competition is getting ever closer, and BMW’s upcoming i4 electric saloon could be the one best positioned to knock the Model 3 off its perch. How so? We take a look…

Mega range

BMW is targeting a WLTP-certified 600km (373-mile) range between charges for the i4, which would put it ahead of the Model 3’s claimed 329-mile range in its most capable guise.

It could even offer a range of batteries beyond its initial launch, too. Shorter range variants could come along to offer a lower price, while a longer-range option would allow customers that cover high mileage a little more ease of use.

Affordable entry to ownership

Electric cars may seem expensive, but BMW is trying hard to make the i4 as affordable as its 3 Series and 4 Series saloons. It will be based on the same CLAR underpinnings as many of the firm’s existing models, which will keep development and production costs down — resulting in a more affordable car.

Impressive performance

Many Model 3 fans will go on about its performance as a selling point, so it’s no surprise BMW wants that to be the case with the i4. It says the car will be capable of 0-60mph in a mind-boggling four seconds before going on to reach a 124mph top speed.  That’s just the base car, too — imagine what an M variant could be like…
